MP murder: DB team flies to Nepal after Kathmandu police nab one suspect
A four-member team from the Detective Branch of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, led by DB Chief Harun-or-Rashid, departed for Kathmandu this morning
A four-member Detective Branch (DB) team of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), led by DB Chief Harun-or-Rashid, travelled to Nepal today (1 June) following the arrest of Md Siam Hossain, another suspect in the murder case of Jhenaidah-4 MP Anwarul Azim Anar, in the country.
Siam was arrested by Kathmandu police on Thursday after being under detective surveillance, a DB officer told TBS.
Meanwhile, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said the primary case related to the murder has been filed in India.
According to Indian media, West Bengal Crime Investigation Department (CID) has formed a four-member special investigation team (SIT) to investigate the murder case.
Five arrested so far
Following the brutal murder of MP Anwarul Azim Anar in a flat in Kolkata, Siam Hossain, along with "butcher" Jihad Hawlader, dismembered and disposed of his body, allegedly flushing the remaining parts down two commodes, according to police sources.
Earlier, Jihad Hawlader was arrested in Kolkata. With the arrest of Siam, a total of five people have been held in this connection so far.
Before departing for Nepal, DB Chief Harun briefed journalists, stating that several suspects involved in the murder of Azim went to Kathmandu. Some have left for other countries, while others are still there.
"We have informed the Nepalese police through Interpol and requested their arrest," he added.
"Akhtaruzzaman Shahin, the alleged mastermind behind MP Azim's murder, fled to Nepal before escaping to another country. We have similar information about other suspects," the DB chief said.
"Like in India, we are going to Nepal to investigate the murder of Azim," he added.
He said that they would be in Nepal for two to three days.
At a programme in Dhaka today, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said, "Arrangements will be made to bring back the fugitives from Nepal."
Anwarul Azim Anar, a three-time member of parliament, went "missing" on 13 May after travelling to Kolkata for medical treatment the previous day.
On the morning of 22 May, Indian media reported his murder in a house in Kolkata's New Town area. The police forces of both countries launched a joint investigation.
Earlier on 23 May, a four-member team from Kolkata CID visited Dhaka to interrogate the three accused currently on remand in Bangladesh, having been arrested by the DB police.
Subsequently, on 26 May, a three-member DB team travelled to Kolkata for further investigation.
