Ride-sharing driver arrested for reportedly trying to kidnap actress Nijhum

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested a driver of a ride-sharing service provider company who reportedly tried to kidnap film actress Nijhum Rubina on 21 January in the Hatirjheel area of the capital.
A team from Rampura Police Station arrested the driver from the Rampura area on Saturday (25 January) night, said Talebur Rahman, deputy commissioner (media) of the DMP.
He, however, did not provide any other details regarding the arrestee.
Earlier on 21 January, in a Facebook post, Nijhum alleged that she jumped out of a car she hailed using Uber, a ride-sharing service provider, to escape from being kidnapped.
"I don't know how to drive and my husband had gone to his village home. So, I called an Uber to travel from Banasree to Dhanmondi. However, instead of taking the direct road to Dhanmondi, the driver entered the Gulshan area through Hatirjheel. When I asked him why he took this route, he said he was following the location and told me to be quiet. Despite the roads being empty that day, he drove toward Gulshan at a speed of 80 to 100 km/h," she wrote in the post.
"Feeling suspicious, I told him to stop and let me out. He responded harshly, telling me to keep quiet. When I realised I was in danger, I rolled down the window and screamed for help, but no one responded. At one point, when the car slowed down, I jumped out to save myself," she added.
A general diary was lodged with Hatirjheel Police Station in this regard.
The Business Standard has reached out to Uber for their reactions on the matter through Benchmark PR, Uber's public relations agency in Bangladesh, and is awaiting their response.
