Two money exchangers stabbed, reportedly robbed of over Tk1cr worth of foreign currencies in Gulshan
The victims have been identified as Abdul Kader Shikder, owner of City Monetary Exchange of Gulshan DCC Market, 35, and his brother-in-law Amir Hamza, 25, said police
Two money exchangers were reportedly stabbed and robbed of Tk1 crore worth of foreign currencies in the capital's Gulshan area on Tuesday (21 January) night.
The victims have been identified as Abdul Kader Shikder, owner of City Monetary Exchange of Gulshan DCC Market, 35, and his brother-in-law Amir Hamza, 25, said police.
Both of them were taken to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where doctors referred them to a private hospital in the city for better treatment, said Inspector Md Faruq, in charge of the DMCH Police outpost.
"Shikder and Hamza were attacked in front of the DCC market on Tuesday around 9pm while they were on their way home," Faruq added.
"We have already informed the local police station about the matter," he said.
Injured Abdul Kader's younger brother Mintu Shikder on Wednesday (22 January) told journalists that Hamza and Abdul were returning home on a motorcycle when they were attacked.
"A few metres from in front of DCC market, 10-15 people blocked their way and hit them with an iron rod. Later the attacker also hit the two with helmets and bricks. Both of them were stabbed as well," said Mintu.
"The attackers left the spot after snatching a bag containing foreign currencies worth more than Tk1 crore from the two," he added.
Mintu, who is also a money exchanger, claimed that he was abducted around four months back and robbed of around Tk79 lakh by a group of unidentified attackers.
He suspected the same group of criminals might be involved in the attack on his brother.
"One person named Yasin Shikder and some other people were involved in my abduction. That time they took away around Tk79 lakh. My brother lodged a lawsuit against them and Yasin Shikder was in jail for some days.
Recently he got released and kept threatening to withdraw the case," he alleged.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Gulshan Division Deputy Commissioner Tarek Mahmud told The Business Standard that police are trying to identify the people behind the mugging.
"The attackers are yet to be identified. We are working on it," he said
