Youth beaten to death for protesting teasing in capital
Two to three young men threw offensive comments at her friend in the capital’s Hazaribagh area
Miscreants have beaten a young man to death allegedly for protesting bad comments made about his friend in the capital's Hazaribagh area on Tuesday night.
The deceased, Ariful Islam Sajal, 22, son of Shahidul Islam, was a resident of Lalbagh area. He was a second-year student of Mohammadpur Government College.
"Local people rushed Sajal to the emergency unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition where doctors declared him dead at 09:30pm," said Inspector Bacchu Miah, in-charge of the hospital police outpost.
"Two to three young men threw offensive comments at me as Sajal and I were chatting in Rayerbazar Dhal area around 8pm," said Sajal's friend Sanjida Akter Dolon.
"In protest, Sajal walked up to them and slapped one of the teasers," Sanjida, a college student, said.
"Later, they came back with 10 to 12 others and attacked Sajal. They beat him mercilessly," she added.
Sanjida said she lives in Hazaribagh and met Sajal three months back. She said she was in a relationship with Sajal.
Sajal's father Shahidul Islam said he got the information about his son over phone from a girl but did not who she was.
"I rushed to the hospital and found my son dead," he said.
"He was home until evening as his tutor came. After that, he went out," added Shahidul.
