Police officials who were dismissed during the Awami League government staged a demonstration on Abdul Gani Road in front of the Bangladesh Secretariat on Thursday (13 February), demanding reinstatement.
During the protest, some former police officers attempted to storm the main entrance of the Secretariat, but their efforts were thwarted by the police deployed at the scene.
The police charged with batons and forcibly dragged some of the ex-officers away to disperse the crowd, pushing them towards Shikkha Bhaban around 1pm.
When contacted, Ramna Zone police officials declined to comment on the matter.
Earlier, the Police Headquarters issued a statement dismissing media reports claiming that 1,522 dismissed officials would be reinstated.
However, the statement assured that steps are being taken to reinstate former police officials who have won their cases at the appellate tribunal.
"Following the proposals given by the committee formed to review the applications, steps are being taken to reinstate those applicants who have won at the appellate tribunal," the statement said.
"Some print and online newspapers have reported that 1,522 ex-police officials are getting their jobs back, which is misleading. We request them to correct their reports," the statement added.
