Dhaka North to launch Culex mosquito eradication drive from 9 Oct

The Dhaka North City Corporation will carry out Culex mosquito eradication drives in its areas from 9 October, Mayor Atiqul Islam announced while participating in Aedes mosquito and dengue prevention activities at Uttara's Sector-4 on Saturday.

He sought cooperation from city dwellers to make the drive a success.

"Water reservoirs, drains, ponds, ditches, and canals will be thoroughly cleaned during the campaign," the mayor said while speaking to journalists.

He urged everyone to keep their residences and neighbourhoods clean in an effort to destroy the breeding grounds of different mosquito species such as Culex and Aedes.

Atiqul Islam said, "We have conducted regular activities to combat outbreaks of Aedes mosquito and dengue. Our public awareness activities are being conducted to make everyone aware, and as a result, dengue has come under control. Similarly, another challenge for us is the Culex mosquito. That is why we will start another campaign."

He said, at homes and educational institutions, flower tubs, unused tires, coconut shells, various types of open packets or pots, roofs or anything else should be taken care of so that water does not accumulate for more than three days.

"The Culex mosquito challenge is coming up, so everyone needs to be careful from now on," said the mayor.

He further said all the developer companies and landowners will receive a letter in this regard within the next seven days.

"Culex mosquitoes grow in ponds and water hyacinths. There is a lake towards Diabari, there is stagnant water, and they are full of water hyacinth. I have already instructed the Rajuk, Civil Aviation, Railways authorities to take necessary action in such places," said the DNCC mayor.

"We want to build a healthy, vibrant, modern, beautiful Dhaka with the cooperation of all," he added.
