3 killed, dozens injured as several vehicles collide due to dense fog in Tangail
At least three people were killed and several others got injured on Thursday morning after some 20-30 vehicles hit each other due to low visibility caused by dense fog in Tangail district.
The accidents took place in different sections of the Dhaka-Tangail-Bangabandhu Bridge highway between 7:30-11am, eyewitnesses told The Business Standard.
Fire service personnel were seen conducting rescue operations at the accident spots in Mirzapur area, Madarjani area under Sadar upazila and Jagatpura area in Bhuapur upazila.
Gorai highway police station OC Mollah Tutul said, "One person was killed when a bus hit the back of a pickup van on the Dhaka-bound lane in the Dhalya-Mansur area of the highway at 9am."
"The deceased was a bus helper. But further details about him are yet to be known. His body has been sent to the police station."
Meanwhile, a college student was killed following a collision between a sand-laden truck and a CNG auto rickshaw in the highway's Jagatpura area around 9:30am.
Confirming the matter, Bhuapur police station OC Fardiul Islam said, "Two more people were injured in the accident. The injured were rescued and sent to Tangail General Hospital for treatment.
"The deceased college student, Ishraq, 20, was the son of Abu Saeed of Thol village."
Besides, a young man was also killed after an unidentified vehicle rammed his motorcycle on the highway's Madarjani area in Kartia union. His identity is yet to ascertain.
Contacted, Tangail Traffic Sergeant Mostak Ahmed said, "Around 16 accidents took place in different spots of the Dhaka-Tangail-Bangabandhu Bridge highway on Thursday morning.
"Multiple casualties have been reported. Several have been injured. The Dhaka-bound lane of the highway is now closed. However, vehicles are moving via the service lane."
"Efforts are underway to bring the situation under control and ease traffic flow," he added.
