DU student’s body found at DMCH morgue 8 days after going missing
His brother identified the body after seeing the picture at Shahbagh police station in the capital on Sunday
Family members identified the body of a Dhaka University student at the morgue of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on Sunday over one week after his disappearance.
The deceased, Hafizur Rahman, 24, was a student in the Information Science and Library Management Department of the 2015-16 academic year in DU. He was also the general secretary of DU Mime Action.
His brother identified the body after seeing the picture at Shahbagh police station in the capital on Sunday, reports ProthomAlo.
Shahbagh police OC Mamun-or-Rashid confirming the matter said the young man committed "suicide" by hacking himself with a machete on the night of 15 May near the DMCH main gate.
Police contacted Hafizur's family following a General Diary (GD) filed by them with Brahmanbaria's Kasba Police Station.
The OC said he contacted the OC of Kasba police station.
From that process, Hafizur Rahman's brother Habibur Rahman came to Shahbagh police station.
When he was shown the picture of the dead body, he shouted that it was his brother. He later went to the morgue and identified the body.
According to his brother, Hafizur returned to Dhaka from Brahmanbaria on 15 May, a day after Eid, and told his family that he had arrived safely.
His family members found his mobile phone switched on from that night.
Describing Hafizur's "suicide", Shahbagh OC said that, Hafizur was seen hacking his neck with a machete on the night of 15 May while crying out, "Forgive me, forgive me."
Pedestrians tried to stop him but failed; some policemen including Shahbagh Police Station Inspector Al Amin on duty rescued him in a critical condition and tried to take him to DMCH in a rickshaw. At one stage, he jumped off from the rickshaw and said, "I will not be treated, forgive me."
He was later taken to DMCH with the help of other people and was taken to the operating theatre, however, despite their best efforts to save him, Haizur died at around 12:30 am.
According to the autopsy report, there were signs of injuries on various parts of his body.
Many of Hafizur's friends and DU students mourned his untimely death, describing it as a mystery.
They also demanded a proper investigation of the incident.
