Editors’ Council concerned over journalist leaders’ bank details seeking
The council also thinks that the action of the central bank is a threat against independent journalism
The Editors' Council has expressed concern over the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) seeking bank account details of 11 journalist leaders.
In a media statement signed by the council President Mahfuz Anam and General Secretary (acting) Dewan Hanif Mahmud Thursday, the council said, "Such incidents will put a squeeze on independent journalism and risk the freedom of the noble profession."
The BFIU recently sent letters to banks seeking statements of 11 journalist leaders, including the president and general secretary of the Jatiya Press Club.
The Editors' Council said, "Investigation can be carried out against specific individuals under the existing law. But seeking bank details of 11 leaders of a specific profession is motivated, unprecedented as well.
