The Chittagong University (CU) has expelled 10 female students for different periods following an incident involving an assault on teachers and journalists at the Sheikh Hasina Hall.
The decision was made during a meeting of the university's Board of Residence, Health, and Disciplinary Committee, held at the vice-chancellor's office at 3pm today (13 February).
Confirming the decision, CU Proctor Professor Tanvir Mohammad Haider Arif stated that Afsana Enayet Emy, a student from the 2018-19 session of the Law Department, has been permanently expelled for physically assaulting Senior Assistant Proctor Professor Korban Ali, who was on duty at the time.
Additionally, the university has decided to cancel her academic certificate.
He further mentioned that nine other students have been expelled for two years for attacking and insulting teachers, students, and journalists.
Another student has been expelled for two years, and a female student for one year, for reportedly inciting chaos by making derogatory remarks about religion.
The official list of those expelled will be published later in the night.
The incident took place on the night of 5 February when a group of students attempted to vandalise the "boat symbol" and a mural of ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina at CU's Sheikh Hasina Hall.
They were confronted by female students residing in the hall, leading to an altercation.
The university's proctorial team intervened to defuse the situation.
During the altercation, Afsana Enayet Em allegedly struck Assistant Proctor Professor Korban Ali.
On 11 February, a video of the incident went viral on social media, sparking widespread calls for the student's expulsion.
In response to the mounting pressure, the university authorities took decisive disciplinary action against the involved student.
