The schedule of the next national election will be determined by the July Charter, said Chief Adviser's Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam today (15 February).
"Our election timing will depend on the July Charter. Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus has already stated that the election could take place by December.
"In that case, some recommendations might be implemented beforehand, while the rest will be carried out by the political party that comes to power," he said while talking to reporters in front of the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka this afternoon.
The first meeting of the National Consensus Commission, which is engaging political parties on the recommendations of six key reform commissions, is being held at the academy.
Yunus, who also chairs the commission, is presiding over the meeting and is expected to address the gathering.
Explaining the Consensus commission's six-month term, Shafiqul said, "There will be detailed discussions with political parties on the reform commission reports. We hope that all parties will sign the decisions reached through national consensus, which will then become the July Charter."
He noted that many of the reform recommendations could be implemented without political negotiations, while others would require broader consensus through discussions with parties.
"This political dialogue marks the beginning of discussions under the National Consensus Commission, focusing on the reconstruction of 'post-July Uprising Bangladesh' and our path towards democratic transition," he added.
