Gangetic Dolphin rescued from flood waters in Fatikchari
A Gangetic Dolphin, locally known as the Shushuk, washed ashore through the flood waters of Fatikchari in Chattogram.
The incident occurred yesterday at around 1pm, when the Shushuk, weighing approximately 20-25kg, was caught in a fishing net.
Fatikchari Upazila Fisheries Officer Md Aziz confirmed the incident, saying, "The fish that was floating in the floodwaters of Fatikchari is a shushuk, scientifically known as Platanista Gangetica. It is a protected species and not meant for consumption. The locals rescued the dolphin and safely released it back into the water. The shushuk likely came from the river through the flood waters."
Due to heavy rainfall, the water levels of the Halda River, Dhurung Canal, and various other canals and waterways in the upazila have risen above the danger level.
