Ershad’s body taken to Rangpur for last time
Ershad’s body will be returned to Dhaka and will be buried at the Military Graveyard in Banani on Tuesday.
The body of Jatiya Party chairman and former president HM Ershad was taken to Rangpur for the last time on Tuesday.
A helicopter carrying his body reached the Rangpur Cantonment at 1:45pm. A guard of honour was presented to Ershad there.
Ershad was an elected member of parliament from Rangpur-3 (Sadar) constituency from where he was elected for six times in a row.
Activists from different front organisations of Jatiya Party and people from all walks of life gathered at the Collectorate Eidgah ground to pay homage to their beloved leader.
A namaz-e-janaza will be held on the ground after the Zohr prayers.
The people of Rangpur are demanding that Ershad be buried in the district. They have also dug a grave for him in the litchi garden of his residence Palli Nibash.
A large number of police have been deployed to keep the law and order under control.

Ershad's qulkhwani will be held on Wednesday at Gulshan's Azad mosque.
Ershad, a former military strongman, died on Sunday morning at the Combined Military Hospital in Dhaka. He was 89.
