Fish-catching banned for 65 days from Wednesday
Catching fish and crustaceans – like shrimp, lobster and cuttlefish – by fishing boat, will be prohibited during the restriction period
The Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock has banned fish-catching in the Bay of Bengal for the next 65 days from Wednesday (May 20).
The initiative was taken to ensure the proper breeding of fish in the economic marine region, read a press release from the ministry on Tuesday.
The fisheries ministry said catching fish and crustaceans – like shrimp, lobster and cuttlefish – by fishing boat will be prohibited during the restriction period.
The fisheries ministry has notified the Bangladesh Navy Headquarters, Public Security Division, Ministry of Shipping, Armed Forces Division, Police Headquarters, Coast Guard, Rab Headquarters, Department of Fisheries, River Police, plus the divisional commissioners of Barishal, Khulna and Chattogram, as well as other relevant offices, of the ban.
The ministry has also asked the authorities concerned to ensure fishing boats do not travel in the region and start a large-scale campaign about the ban on fish-catching.
It also asked the officials concerned to distribute food assistance among the fishers and implement the restriction properly.
Fisheries and Livestock Minister SM Rezaul Karim said, "We want to strictly implement the government's decision to stop illegal fishing and ensure the proper breeding of fish. Nobody will be allowed to do anything outside of law."
The minister said 23,496.98 metric tonnes of food has been allotted for 4.19 lakh fisher families.
