Fisheries adviser calls for reduced antibiotic use in food production
To address environmental concerns, she directed local authorities to take strict legal action against illegal encroachments on rivers, canals, and waterways
Fisheries and Livestock Adviser Farida Akhtar today (8 October) urged for a reduction in the use of antibiotics in animal farming to ensure safe food for consumers.
Speaking at a views exchange meeting at Tangail's Delduar upazila, the adviser emphasised the interconnectedness of human and animal food and warned of the increasing antibiotic resistance in humans due to excessive antibiotic residues in food products.
She highlighted the need for farmers to prioritise food production and avoid relying solely on company-supplied feed.
At the meeting, Farida called for increased social awareness and assured farmers of the Department of Fisheries and Livestock's support.
The adviser encouraged farmers to be independent by being informed about fluctuations in chicken feed and chick prices, as contract farming often favours businessmen over real farmers.
To address environmental concerns, she directed local authorities to take strict legal action against illegal encroachments on rivers, canals, and waterways.
The adviser also commended the poultry industry for its role in empowering women entrepreneurs and contributing to their self-reliance.
