Former GCC Mayor MA Mannan gets 1 year jail in graft case

Former Mayor of Gazipur City Corporation MA Mannan has been sentenced to one year imprisonment on charge of embezzling Tk50 lakh from the city corporation fund using fake vouchers.
At the same time he was fined TK50 lakh. In failure to pay the amount, he will serve more three months in jail.
Judge Syed Kamal Hossain of the Dhaka Divisional Special Court handed down the verdict on Tuesday. But it was disclosed on Wednesday by Anti-Corruption Commission Lawyer Mahmud Hossain.
However, the court granted bail to the former mayor immediately as he sought bail saying he will file an appeal petition against the verdict, said the lawyer.
The court also acquitted the other accused – Golam Qibria – from charges.
According to the case statement, MA Mannan during his tenure misappropriated an amount of TK491,848 from the relief fund of GCC using some fake vouchers.
Over the incident, ACC Deputy Assistant Director Shamsul Alam filed a case against Mannan and his associate Golam Kibria at Joydebpur Police Station in Gazipur on 23 June, 2016.
The ACC pressed charges against the duo on 12 January, 2017. The Gazipur Special Judge's Court then took the case to its cognizance and transferred it to the Dhaka Divisional Special Judge's Court for further trial.
On 17 January, 2019, the Dhaka Divisional Special Judge's Court framed charges against them. A total of six people testified in the case at different times.
