DGHS orders hospitals to prioritise treatment of Bhairab train accident victims
The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) has directed hospitals to prioritise the treatment of Bhairab train accident victims.
"The health department has issued directives to prioritise the treatment of those injured in the accident. Despite Tuesday being a public holiday, there will be no deficiencies in the medical system for the treatment of the injured," Dr Abu Hossain Md Moinul Ahsan, acting Director (hospitals and clinics), of DGHS said at a press briefing on Monday night.
He noted that eight people are currently undergoing treatment at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital and eight others at the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedic Rehabilitation (NITOR).
"A total of 75 people injured in the tragic train accident were taken to Bhairab Upazila Health Complex. Of them, 28 seriously injured patients have been referred to Dhaka for better treatment," the DGHS official said.
Dr Bulbul Ahmmad, official at the Bhairab Upazila Health Complex said, thirteen bodies were brought to the health facility and three others died while undergoing treatment.
"So far, 11 bodies have been identified. The bodies are being handed over to their families without post mortem," he added.
Dr Saiful Islam, civil surgeon of Kishoreganj, said over 100 healthcare professionals, including a 20-member team at Bhairab Upazila Health Complex, 40 doctors, nurses and midwives from neighbouring upazilas, are providing healthcare services to the accident victims.
At least 17 people have been killed and over 100 others injured after two trains collided in Bhairab of Kishoreganj.
The accidents occurred when Egarosindhur Express collided with a freight train at Bhairab station on Monday (23 October) afternoon.
