Govt working to ensure healthcare for all by 2030: Health minister
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has chosen ‘My Health, My Right’ as the theme of World Health Day 2024
The government is working to achieve "health for all' by 2030, Health Minister Samanta Lal Sen said on Saturday (6 April).
Speaking at a World Health Day 2024 discussion in the capital city, he emphasised the importance of delivering quality healthcare services to remote areas.
"To achieve this goal," he said, "treatment must reach every corner of the country."
The minister acknowledged the crucial role of healthcare workers. "Success depends on doctors, nurses, and healthcare officials working effectively," he said. "I will ensure you have all the necessary facilities. Serve the people, and I will provide everything you need."
The discussion also highlighted key challenges.
Prof Dr Din Md Nurul Haque, the newly appointed Vice-Chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, stressed the importance of tackling counterfeit medicine. "Quality medicine is a major concern. The prevalence of fake drugs throughout the country, even in Dhaka. To prevent counterfeit medicines, stricter monitoring is a must."
Another critical issue is the lack of manpower. "Doctors and nurses alone cannot deliver comprehensive healthcare. Currently, nearly 40% of health assistant positions are vacant nationwide. We need to address this staffing shortage," Dr Haque added.
"While Bangladesh has invested in healthcare infrastructure, ensuring adequate staffing and funding is crucial to fulfil the aforesaid goal," he said.
World Health Day 2024 is set to be celebrated on Sunday with the theme of "My Health, My Right".
