High Court observing steps on police marrying off gang-rape victim to accused

The High Court today said it is observing what steps the government takes regarding the involvement of the officer-in-charge of Pabna Sadar police stationin forcibly marrying off a rape victim to the prime accused.
The bench involved Justice M Inayetur Rahim and Justice Md Khairul Alam.
Advocate Jamiul Haque Faisal of the Supreme Court brought the matter to the bench.
On August 29, Russel Ahmed along with his four accomplices, all from Pabna Sadar upazila, allegedly abducted the victim of the same upazila and gang-raped her for four days.
After escaping the scene, the woman shared the incident with her relatives and was admitted to Pabna General Hospital on September 5.
Later, the victim submitted a written complaint to Pabna Sadar police station. The police detained Russel but did not file any case at that time.
Instead, the police allegedly forced the woman to divorce her husband and marry Russel on September 6.
OC Obaidul Haque was served a show-cause notice for his alleged involvement in this matter.
The High Court bench today said they will take legal steps after observing the government's action.
