Human chain formed protesting arrest of 2 DU students
Students demanded a clear answer from the university's proctor as to why police entered the university campus and attacked students with truncheons and tear shells and arrested several students without any reason.
General students of the University of Dhaka (DU) formed a human chain in front of the Raju Memorial Sculpture today protesting the arrest of two students of the university.
Md Akif Ahmed and Md Arafat Saad from DU along with five other students from different universities were arrested on 26 February during a torch procession protesting the death of writer Musthaq Ahmed in Kashimpur jail.
Currently, the arrestees are in Dhaka Central Jail, Keraniganj.
Speakers from the human chain demanded a clear answer from the University's proctor as to why police entered the university campus and attacked students with truncheons and tear shells and arrested several students without any reason.
Later, they went to DU Proctor Prof AKM Golam Rabbani and demanded the removal of the police force from the campus, arguing that they don't feel safe following the police attack.
Prof AKM Golam Rabbani assured them that he would look into the matter. "Dhaka University has been the epicentre of many national and international movements. We believe in freedom of speech and we encourage our students to practice their constitutional rights. But don't take our generosity as our weakness."
At least 50 protesters were injured on Friday evening in the clash between police and activists of left-leaning student organizations, who protested the custodial death of writer Mushtaq Ahmed arrested under the Digital Security Act.
