Transport, Power, Science, ICT sectors to get lower development allocation
The extended committee of the Planning Commission finalised the draft of the revised Annual Development Programme for the current fiscal, which will be effective after the NEC approval
Transport, Power, Science and ICT sector are going to have a lower development allocation from the revised Annual Development Programme for the current fiscal year.
The most priority Transportation Sector comprising road, rail, shipping and air infrastructure is going to receive an allocation of Tk49,212 crore in the proposed revised ADP, which was Tk52,183 crore in the original allocation.
Allocation for some other prioritised sectors like Power and ICT will also be reduced significantly.
An extended committee meeting of the Planning Commission held at the National Economic Council (NEC) auditorium on Thursday approved the draft revised ADP.
The meeting was presided over by Planning Minister MA Mannan, who is also the vice-chairman of the Planning Commission.
The revised ADP will be effective after the final approval at the next NEC meeting to be chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, said sources at the Planning Commission.
The commission downsized the allocation from Tk2,05,145 crore in the original ADP to Tk1,97,643 crore, a decrease by Tk7,502 crore for the current fiscal year.
Khondoker Ahsan Hossain, chief of the programming divisions of the Planning Commission, told The Business Standard that allocation proposal of all ministries and divisions based on their demand were presented in the meeting that gave the primary nod.
He said the amount will be deducted from foreign sources while the allocation from government's own fund will remain unchanged.
"Correction to the ADP is a regular process and it has been done in accordance with the demand of the executing agencies," he explained.
The second priority sector -- Physical Planning, Water Supply and Housing -- will receive Tk26,491 core, slightly higher than the original allocation of Tk25,795 crore.
Education and religion sector will get the third highest of Tk24,570 crore, which was Tk23,390 crore in the original ADP. Allocation for the sector will increase by Tk1,180 crore.
Power sector will receive Tk21,900 crore, which was Tk24,804 crore in the original ADP. Allocation for the sector will drop by 11.70%.
Science and ICT sector will have Tk11,575 crore, which was Tk11,448 crore in the original ADP.
Ruppor Nuclear Power plant project will lose Tk6,873 crore, more than 37% of its original allocation.
