Jamaat expels 2 supporters over harassment of freedom fighter in Chauddagram
They also demanded strict punishment for those involved in this incident, including its 'expelled' supporters
Cumilla district Jamaat-e-Islami has expelled two of its supporters for their alleged involvement in the humiliation and defamation of freedom fighter Abdul Hai Kanu in Chauddagram.
The expelled Jamaat supporters are Muhammad Abul Hashem and Muhammad Ohidur Rahman.
In a joint statement issued today (23 December), top Jamaat leaders in four units in Cumilla said, "The reports of humiliation of freedom fighter Abdul Hai Kanu have come to our attention. We strongly condemn and protest this unfortunate incident."
They also demanded strict punishment for those involved in this incident, including Abul Hashem and Ohidur Rahman.
"Despite being [Jamaat's] supporters, they have been expelled from the party for violating party discipline and tarnishing its image," reads the statement.
The Jamaat leaders further stated that freedom fighters are the nation's best sons and emphasised that Jamaat-e-Islami opposes the harassment of not only valiant freedom fighters but also any citizen of the country.
"We urge the government to promptly arrest those responsible for this unfortunate incident and ensure they face justice as per the law," they said.
They also clarified that the individuals involved in this incident are not leaders or members of Jamaat-e-Islami at any level.
"Jamaat-e-Islami does not, under any circumstances, endorse or tolerate its leaders or workers taking the law into their own hands," they added.
A video of freedom fighter Abdul Hai Kanu being forced to wear a garland of shoes has gone viral on social media.
The government has strongly condemned the humiliation and defamation of the freedom fighter.
Police and local administration have been asked to launch an investigation into the incident and bring the perpetrators to book.
