Jamuna erosion worsens in Tangail
Necessary measures would be taken as soon as possible.
Erosion by the Jamuna River took a serious turn on Sunday because of a sudden rise in water level.
Around 200 houses, a vast tract of croplands and educational institutions in different villages under Govindsi, Kastopara, Kutiboyra unions in Bhuiyapur upazila were devoured by the river due to the erosion.
Many affected people have gathered on roads while many took shelter at their relatives’ houses, reports our correspondent in Tangail.
Locals said they did not receive any relief from government or non-government organisations yet.
They demanded that the government build an embankment to protect them.
Erosion of the Jamuna banks takes place every year, devouring dwellings and croplands.
Talking to The Business Standard, the Bhuiyapur Upazila Parishad chairman said they could not provide any aid due to a lack of funds.
Tangail Water Development Board’s Executive Engineer Sirajul Islam said necessary measures would be taken as soon as possible.
