Low traffic movement on 11th day of lockdown
The number of vehicles on the city streets declined significantly during the last three days as there was a three-day government holiday since Friday
There were less people and traffic on the Dhaka city streets on Sunday, the 11th day of lockdown, compared to the initial days of the lockdown imposed to curb the Covid-19 infections.
The number of vehicles on the city streets declined significantly during the last three days as there was a three-day government holiday since Friday.
Yesterday, there were fewer cars and pedestrians, but more motorcycles on the streets compared to the previous days of lockdown.
Traffic Sergeant Arifur Rahman said, "In many cases, there were two passengers on the bike. We are letting go those who can show reasonable causes for taking a pillion rider, but fining those who cannot."
Echoing Arifur, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Sub-Inspector Jalal Uddin said, "I have been on duty at the Khidmah Hospital check post since 7am. Today, like yesterday, the pressure of cars and people is low, but still some people are getting out unnecessarily. Some are taking pillion riders on their motorcycles. We are stopping them and releasing them after slapping fines."
"We have fined 10 people since morning, but detained no one," he added.
Md Monir Hossen, DMP Traffic Inspector, said, "We see that fewer people are wandering around unnecessarily today in the area around the BG Press check-post."
"We have taken action against only three people since morning. They have been fined," he added.
A similar picture was also seen in several other area including Mohakhali, Bijoy Saroni, Shahbag and Banglamotor.
