Mobile phone users’ association condemns Rozina’s arrest

Bangladesh Mobile Phone Subscribers Association has strongly condemned the arrest of Rozina Islam, a senior reporter of the daily Prothom Alo, in the health ministry while performing her professional duties.
Expressing concern over the charges against Rozina, the organisation conveyed its concerns that a 98-year-old colonial law has been used to harass her.
In a press release, the association has demanded an end to the misemployment of this law and its annulment during the next parliamentary session.

According to the press release, the three basic provisions (i.e. espionage to jeopardise state interests, sedition, and threat to state integrity) of the case do not apply to Journalist Rozina.
The mobile phone users' association gave further reference to the case of Indian Journalist Poonam Agarwal, associate editor of The Quint, who was charged after exposing military abuse.
It said, "The government can take into account the Poonam Agarwal case where the Indian high court had quashed the FIR registered against her for abetment of suicide of a soldier who was interviewed by her in a sting video."
