The multi-floor basement at an under-construction building near Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's residence at Dhanmondi 32 is a parking lot, not a secret detention centre as rumours on social media platforms claim, The Business Standard has found during a visit to the spot.
A large crowd has gathered at the place this afternoon (7 February) after several videos of the basement, which stretches down at least four floors, went viral on social media since last night, prompting debates amongst netizens about its purposes.
Some assumed it is a parking lot, some others suspected it is a secret detention centre like the infamous Aynaghar.
However, the police said they have not found any evidence that supports the claim of it being used as a secret detention centre.

When asked about the situation, Dhanmondi Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ali Ahmed Masud said, "Our officers are present at the site, but we have not found any concrete evidence to support the claims of an Aynaghar."
Visiting the basement this evening, TBS correspondents also found no traces of it being used as a detention centre. The wide basement is designed as a multi-floor parking lot.
Suspicions regarding the basement rose as parts of it have been found to be filled with water.
Some of the visitors were seen checking the depth of the basement and found no traces of it ever being used as a detention centre.
"The water is not that deep. I have checked. There's nothing else to it," said the visitor.
