National Citizens' Committee rejects appointing new ACC officials before reform commission's recommendations
The National Citizens' Committee has rejected the initiative to appoint new officials for the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) before the graft body's reform commission submits its recommendations which are due on 31 December.
In a statement today (26 November), the committee called for cancelling the selection committee formed earlier this month to recommend candidates for the positions of chairman and commissioners of the ACC.
Earlier on 3 October, the interim government formally constituted a separate commission to oversee reforms in the Anti-Corruption Commission, to be headed by Iftekharuzzaman, executive director of Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB).
The committee said, "All members of the reform commission, including Iftekharuzzaman, are experts on corruption in Bangladesh. The activities of this commission have not yet completed. They will submit their report after completing their work by December.
"In such a situation, we express deep concern regarding the government's initiative to form a new ACC before the reform recommendations come in."
The Anti-Corruption Commission formed before the reforms will not be acceptable by the people, said the committee, adding, "We expect swift and appropriate action from the interim government in this regard."
