Police block human chain by UP chairmen, members in Faridpur
The event was organised as part of a central program by the Union Parishad Forum to appeal to the Local Government Ministry to allow them to remain in office for the full duration of elected terms
A planned human chain by Union Parishad (UP) chairmen and members in Faridpur was blocked by police today (17 October).
The event was organised as part of a central program by the Union Parishad Forum to appeal to the Local Government Ministry to allow them to remain in office for the full duration of elected terms.
Around 10:30am, chairmen and members from various unions gathered in front of the Faridpur Press Club to form the human chain, but police, who were already stationed there, dispersed them.
When the group moved to the Faridpur Deputy Commissioner's office to continue their protest, police intervened again, forcing them to leave.
Syed Shahin Alam Shahabur, chairman of no-2 Nurullahganj union in Bhanga upazila, Zakir Hossain, chairman of Raipur union in Madhukhali upazila, and MM Siddiq Mia, chairman of Algi union in Bhanga upazila, expressed their frustration over being denied the right to protest peacefully.
"We were trying to hold a peaceful human chain, but the police didn't allow it," said Chairman Shahin Alam.
Following the disruption, several UP chairmen submitted a memorandum with their demands to the Chief Adviser through the Faridpur Deputy Commissioner's office.
