BNP’s advice on democracy meaningless: Hanif
He says if Bangabandhu had survived, the country would have developed like Thailand and Malaysia today
Awami League Joint General Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif has said advice on democracy by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is meaningless since the party was formed in an undemocratic way.
"Now they talk about democracy everywhere and all the time. But the nation wants to know what the BNP refers to by democracy while it was established undemocratically," he told a seminar entitled "The power of Bangabandhu's philosophy and his modesty" in Dhaka Sunday.
Referring to BNP's stint, Hanif at the programme organised by Bishwashanti and Manobadhikar Sangha Bangladesh commented the BNP assassinated political opponents to concrete its power and plotted to kill Awami League chief Sheikh Hasina.
"People did not forget the 21 August grenade attack. The nation wants to know which version of democracy you implemented when you were in power in 2006," he said.
The ruling party joint general secretary noted the country has become independent under the leadership of Bangabandhu but the killers did not give him the time to rebuild the war-torn nation.
"If Bangabandhu had survived, the country would have developed like Thailand and Malaysia today. Now Bangabandhu's daughter Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is working to build the golden Bengal what Bangabandhu had dreamed of," Hanif went on saying.
Addressing the BNP, he said, "The country is striding ahead and you were supposed to support Sheikh Hasina's leadership. Instead of that, you are pushing the country to destructive politics."
Commenting that the BNP's top brass should be reshuffled, Hanif said, "There is nothing but terror and corruption in the thinking of Tarique Rahman whom you have made the leader. He is the one who plotted to assassinate Sheikh Hasina."
"A party led by such a person with a vicious mentality cannot give anything to the country or people. If you really want to do politics, change your political leadership," he said.
The programme was presided over by Bishwashanti and Manobadhikar Sangha Bangladesh President and Begum Rokeya University Vice-Chancellor Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah.
The organisation General Secretary Fanindra Sarkar presented the keynote paper while private channel News 24 Head of News Rahul Raha and Awami Swechchhasebak League leader Faisal Ahsan Ullah also spoke.
