Police arrested the both councillor candidates after the clash
A man was shot dead in a clash between two councillor candidates during Patiya municipal polls in Chattogram on Sunday.
The deceased was identified as Abdul Mabud, 45, brother of councilor candidate Abdul Mannan.
The clash took place in Dakhshin Gobindo Khil polling station of No.8 ward of the municipality around 12pm, Minhaj Mahmud, officer-in-charge (investigation) of Patiya Police Station confirmed it to The Business Standard.
According to locals, the clash ensued between the supporters of two councillor candidates Abdul Mannan and Sarwar Kamal.
The both parties exchanged gunshots during the clash. At one stage, Mabub received a bullet and died on the spot.
Three shops were also torched.
Police arrested the both councillor candidates after the clash, said the OC.
Meanwhile, another councillor candidate Abdul Khalek of No.1 ward of the municipality was allegedly abducted by miscreants, claimed his family members.
Voting in the fourth phase of elections in 55 municipalities started on Sunday with the involvement of political parties in the local mayoral race.
Balloting started at 8 am and will continue until 4 pm without any break.
