Jamaat, Islami Andolan chiefs meet, hint at political unity
Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman met with Islami Andolan Bangladesh Ameer Syed Mohammad Rezaul Karim, also known as Charmonai Pir, in Barishal today (21 January), signaling closer ties between the two parties.
Shafiqur came to Barisal this morning to attend the Jamaat's district and metropolitan workers' conference. He paid a courtesy call on Rezaul at the Charmonai Darbar Sharif this afternoon.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, both the leaders said their parties have been used by other political parties for a long time and they do not want to be used like that anymore.
Asked whether a unity or alliance would be formed between Islamic parties in the next national election, they asked for prayers from the public for unity.
Shafiqur said, "We basically want to see unity among Islamic parties. With our united strength, we will not allow any more farce elections. Therefore, elections must be held after the reforms within the appropriate time."
Rezaul said, "The new independence we got on 5 August after 53 years has created a good environment for Islam. If we cannot take timely steps in that regard, it will be unlucky and unfortunate for us. Therefore, I seek everyone's prayers so that we can all work together to build the country."
He further said, "In the current circumstances, it can be said that we [Jamaat and Islami Andolan] are coming closer together."
