Population Census to include expatriate Bangladeshis
Statistics and Information Management Department Secretary Sourendra Nath Chakraborty made the remark on Wednesday while launching a workshop over the 6th population census which is scheduled to be held in 2021.
At least one crore expatriate Bangladeshi citizens, who have been living overseas for livelihood and education, will be included in the population census for the first time.
Statistics and Information Management Department Secretary Sourendra Nath Chakraborty made the remark on Wednesday while launching a workshop over the 6th population census which is scheduled to be held in 2021.
“The census will include at least one crore Non-residential Bangladeshis along with foreigners who have been staying in Bangladesh for a certain period,” he said.
Dr Krishna Gayan, the Director-General of Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), presided over the workshop.
He said 16 indices of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and 97 other necessary denominators will come out from the census.
Additional secretary of Statistics and Information Management Bikash Kishore Dash said the outcome of this census will influence other surveys of the country.
“If the total population of the country increases after the census, the per capita income will fall. Authorities have to conduct the census with accuracy.”
The census will be kicked off on the midnight of 17th March 2021 to honour the 100th birth anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
The first population census was held in the country in 1974 while the fifth census was conducted in 2011.
According to the Statistics Act-2013, the 2021 census will be introduced as Population and Housing Census.
Officials said, 25 queries were included in the 2011’s census while more questions need to be incorporated in the questionnaire of 2021 census to fulfil the SDG requirement.
