The front part of the residence of AHM Khairuzzaman Liton, former mayor of Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) and member of the Awami League presidium, has been demolished on the outskirts of the city.
According to eyewitnesses, the demolition began at around 11pm on Thursday when a bulldozer started tearing down the structure. By midnight, the front section of Liton's three-storey house had been completely destroyed.
Angry crowds gathered at the scene and chanted slogans against the former mayor as they watched the demolition.
After the fall of the Awami League government on August 5, Liton went into hiding with his family, who are now residing in India. On the same day that Sheikh Hasina's government fell, Liton's house was attacked and looted; the following day, its doors and windows were removed, leaving the building abandoned. The recent demolition appears to be an attempt to dismantle the remaining structure.
In a related incident, the regional office of the Awami League near Newmarket—also located on the outskirts of Rajshahi—was demolished by a bulldozer at around 9:00 pm on Thursday.
