Salesman dies in Chattogram police custody
A watchman of the market informed the police on suspicion as the market is closed due to lockdown
A salesman died in police custody in Chattogram at around 6:20pm on Wednesday.
The man was identified as Giridhar Chowdhury, 60. He worked as a salesman at a clothing shop in Chattogram's Terribazar wholesale market.
"A watchman of the market informed the police on suspicion as the market is closed due to the countrywide lockdown," according to police sources. Giridhar was taking some cloths from the shop he worked, police informed.
Mohammad Mohsin, officer-in-charge of Kotowali police station informed that Giridhar was brought to Anderkilla police outpost during Iftar time. Suddenly he fell sick and was taken to hospital.
"He was asked to contact the shop owner for a verification. Police did not torture him. We think he died of a stroke," He said.
"Police took Giridhar to the nearby police outpost at Anderkilla area. Suddenly he fell sick. after taking to the hospital, the doctors declared him dead. However, the reason behind the death yet to be confirmed," said Local ward councilor Zahurulal Hazari.
A three-member probe committee was formed into the incident. Two policemen were closed over the incident.
The committee was asked to submit report within 24 hours, said SN Mehedi Hasan, deputy commissioner of Chattogram Metropolitan police.
