Sayeedi moved to Rajshahi jail
Sayeedi is one of the accused in the Rajshahi University student Faruk Hossain murder
War crimes convict Delwar Hossain Sayeedi has been shifted to Rajshahi central jail last week, said senior jail super of Rajshahi central jail Halima Khatun. However, the official did not clarify why the controversial preacher was taken there.
However, sources said the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami leader was moved to the northern district amid secrecy as he is scheduled to attend a murder case hearing at the district court on Thursday.
According to a jail source, Sayeedi is one of the accused in the Rajshahi University student Faruk Hossain murder.
Faruk was killed during fierce overnight clashes between pro-ruling party Chhatra League and pro-Jamaat Chhatra Shibir activists in 2010. Later, police accused top Jamaat leaders in a case filed in this regard.
On Feb 8, 2013, the International Crimes Tribunal-1 sentenced Sayeedi to death for war crimes committed in the 1971 Liberation War. Clashes erupted between the police and Jamaat supporters left at least 35 people dead while scores were injured in protest following the death sentence.
The Supreme Court on Sept 17, 2014 reduced the punishment from death sentence to life imprisonment following a petition by Sayeedi.
