The body of a school teacher who went missing 14 days ago has been recovered from a sack found in a pond in Cox's Bazar's Pekua.
The deceased is Mohammad Arif, 50, the former headmaster of Pekua Central School and College.
Fire service members recovered his body from an abandoned pond inside his own property around 3:30pm today (11 October).
Mehbuba Anwar Laiju, Arif's wife, had claimed that her husband was abducted and forced into a car by some eight to nine miscreants while returning from Pekua's Chowmuhoni area around 9pm on 28 September.
In a press briefing at a restaurant in Chattogram, Laiju had claimed that her husband was abducted due to disputes over land and securing ransom.
According to Laiju, the abductors demanded up to Tk40 lakh from her mother-in-law in three phases after abducting her husband. She said they even paid Tk50,000 through Nagad to keep him alive.
During the press briefing, Laiju also said that they had submitted complaints at various offices of the law enforcement agencies to find her husband.
Contacted, Sijaul Mostafa, officer in charge of Pekua police station, said, "The body of Arif has been found in a sack from a pond inside his house after remaining missing for a long time. Legal processes are currently underway."
Meanwhile, locals have set fire to former upazila parishad chairman Jahangir Alam's house on suspicion that he was involved in the abduction.
"The situation in the area is tense. Police is trying to control the situation," Sirajul added.
