Section 144 issued in Brahmanbaria amid tensions between two BNP factions
Local administration has imposed Section 144 in Brahmanbaria's Bancharampur to maintain law and order amid tensions between two factions of the BNP.
Bancharampur upazila administration issued the order tonight (19 November), Upazila Nirbahi Officer Muhammad Abul Munsur confirmed The Business Standard.
All kinds of gatherings will remain prohibited on the SM Model Pilot High School grounds and surrounding areas till Thursday (21 November) evening, he said.
Yesterday, at least 30 people were injured in a clash between leaders and activists of two factions of BNP in Brahmanbaria over the upcoming conference of the party's Bancharampur upazila unit.
Locals said BNP's Bancharampur upazila unit was set to organise its conference on Wednesday (20 November). However, there were tensions between the supporters of Abdul Khalek, a member of the BNP's executive committee, and Mehedi Hasan Polash, joint general secretary of Krishak Dal, surrounding this conference.
In continuation of that, Khalek supporters brought out a protest march yesterday against the conference from the Palli Bidyut Mor of Bancharampur upazila town. When they reached the Musa Market area, Palash supporters started throwing brickbats at the procession, which triggered the clash.
Leaders and activists of both groups were seen carrying locally made weapons, said witnesses.
Police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control soon, said Bancharampur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Morshed Alam.
Additional police personnel were deployed in the area to avoid further tensions and clashes in the area, he added.
