Stealing the poor’s rice
The rice was supposed to be sold to ultra-poor people for Tk10 per kg
A mobile court on Thursday seized 16 sacks of subsidised rice meant for lower-income people from a dealer's warehouse in Mymensingh's Trishal area.
The dealer named Abdul Khalek had illegally taken the amount of rice to his private storehouse on the sly, said our local correspondent quoting the mobile court.
The rice under Vulnerable Group Feeding (VGF) was supposed to be sold among ultra-poor people for Tk10 per kg.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mostafizur Rahman said when the people went to the dealer's shop in the upazila's Boilor union for buying the subsidised rice, the dealer told them that he had only two sacks of the product.
Later in the afternoon, upon a complaint from the buyers, the UNO and Executive Magistrate Tarikul Islam conducted the drive and seized 16 sacks of rice, each weighing 30kg, from Abul's shop.
Executive Magistrate Tarikul Islam said the dealer was not available at his shop during the drive. Apart from cancelling his dealership, legal actions will be taken against him.
