Sylhet cop suspended after bomb-like thing found in his bike
Police also has launched an investigation to find out who put the thing in a police officer's vehicle
Chayan Naidu, sergeant of traffic division under the Sylhet Metropolitan Police, has been suspended temporarily after a bomb-like thing was found in his bike in Chowhatta area of the city on Wednesday last.
The recovery of the bomb-like object had created a hue and cry across the country's eastern city.
However, later the substance was found out to be a grinding machine (used as a tyles cutter) after around 22-hour long scrutiny by members of law enforcement agencies including the Bangladesh Army, the Bangladesh Police and the Rapid Action Battalion.
Soon after the identification, police also launched an investigation to find out who put the thing in a police officer's vehicle.
Meanwhile, the news of Sergeant Chayan's temporary suspension came on Saturday night.
"Chayan was suspended the next day of the incident. But the decision was not disclosed then for the interest of the investigation," said Faisal Mahmud, deputy commissioner (traffic) of the Sylhet Metropolitan Police.
"In spite of an assigned duty in Chowhatta area on the day the incident happened, Chayan was not present in the area. Besides, he left government assets unprotected. For all of these, he was suspended," said Faisal Mahmud.
The incident is being investigated. Punitive action will be taken against Chayan if his negligence to the duty is found, Faisal added.
