Top terror Sweden Aslam released from Kashimpur jail
Aslam is one of the 23 top criminals declared during the tenure of the BNP-led four-party coalition government in the early 2000s.
Sheikh Mohammad Aslam, a notorious figure known as Sweden Aslam and widely discussed in the public domain, has been released from Kashimpur High-Security Central Jail in Gazipur on bail.
He walked out of prison around 9pm on Tuesday (3 September) and left for Dhaka with his family, confirmed Senior Jail Superintendent Abdullah Al Mamun today (4 September).
Sweden Aslam faces 12 cases with the latest one filed in connection with the murder of Jubo League leader Ghalib of Tejgaon on 23 March 1997.
The police submitted a charge sheet in the case on 8 April 1998, and the trial is currently ongoing. Out of the 24 witnesses, the police have so far managed to produce only 14 in court. Aslam was released from jail after securing bail in that case.
According to prison authorities, the bail papers for Sweden Aslam, 62, arrived at Kashimpur jail on 28 August. They reviewed the papers and released him on Tuesday.
Aslam is one of the 23 persons declared top criminals during the tenure of the BNP-led four-party coalition government in the early 2000s.
He was also accused of shooting a young boy named Shakil, who was holding his mother's hand, in front of a school in the Farmgate area in 1986. Since then he has been accused in several murder cases.
He stayed in Sweden for a time and earned the name "Sweden Aslam" upon his return. He was arrested on 31 January 2005 and transferred to various prisons before arriving at Kashimpur jail in 2014.
