‘True democracy cannot be established without institutionalization of democratic system’

Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader has said real democracy cannot be established without institutionalization of democratic system.
He made the remark today after paying homage to the martyrdom of Noor Hossain at Noor Hossain Chattar in the capital's Zero Point on behalf of Awami League on the occasion of Shaheed Noor Hossain Day.
Noor Hossain, who imprinted his bare chest and back with the slogan "Swairachar nipat jak, gonotantra mukti pak" (down with autocracy, let democracy be freed), was killed when police opened fire on an anti-autocracy demonstration at Zero Point on 10 November in 1987.
After his death, the Zero Point area was renamed Shaheed Noor Hossain Chattar (square) and 10 November was declared Shaheed Noor Hossain Day.
On the day, Noor's body was a living political poster, said Quader. Shaheed Noor Hossain had ignited the flame of rebellion within Bengalis, he said.
Earlier in the morning, a BNP delegation led by Amanullah Aman, adviser to the BNP chairperson, paid homage to Noor Hossain by placing floral wreaths at the Chattar.
President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina also have issued separate messages on the occasion.
