Wildlife trafficker arrested with 5 parrots in Chattogram
The arrestee, identified as Joynal Abedin, 43, was taken into custody following the rescue of the parrots
The Wildlife Division of the Chattogram Forest Department yesterday arrested a trafficker with five country parrots, a species protected under the Wildlife (Conservation and Security) Act 2012, in Chattogram.
The arrestee, identified as Joynal Abedin, 43, was taken into custody following the rescue of the parrots. He was produced before the court following the filing of a case under the Wildlife Act.
Dipannita Bhattacharjee, wildlife and biodiversity conservation officer at the Chattogram Forest Department, told The Business Standard, "A network of wildlife traffickers has been attempting to sell various wild animals on online platforms. We tracked their advertisement and used an undercover source posing as a buyer to order five parrots."
"We apprehended Joynal red-handed with a cage containing five parrots. Preliminary investigations indicate that Joynal is an active member of a wildlife trafficking ring based in Bogura, and the parrots were transported via the bus from there," she added.
Dipannita emphasized that the country parrot is a locally found species listed as a restricted species under the Wildlife (Conservation and Security) Act 2012.
"It is illegal to catch, transport, buy, sell, or breed this species," she added.
