The number of confirmed novel coronavirus cases got closer to the 5 lakh mark as the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) reported 1,134 new cases in the 24 hours till Thursday 8am.
The number of novel coronavirus cases in the country now stands at 496,975.
In the last 24 hours, 36 more deaths from the novel coronavirus were recorded in the country, taking the country's death toll from the virus to 7,192.
Noted virologist Professor Nazrul Islam told The Business Standard that, "Covid-19 infection rate declined in last few days but the number of deaths is still high."
"The number of deaths cannot be reduced because of poor hospital management. Hospital management needs to be developed to reduce deaths," said Professor Nazrul Islam, former vice chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University.
The latest day's infection rate was 8.60% of the total tests, and the overall rate in the country to date was 16.37%. The death rate currently stands at 1.45%.
Among the latest victims, 27 were men and nine were women who passed away in different hospitals across the country, according to the press release.
Moreover, 20 of them hailed from Dhaka division, eight from Chattogram, three from Rangpur, two from Rajshahi and one each from Khulna, Sylhet and Mymensingh divisions.
Meanwhile, 13,191 samples were tested in 140 labs across the country in the past 24 hours. So far, 30,35,728 samples have been tested in the country.
Besides, 2,239 patients were declared free of Covid-19 during the same period, raising the total number of recoveries to 4,31,590 with a 86.84% recovery rate.
A gender breakdown of the total deceased shows that 5,489 were men and 1,703 were women.
The country's first cases were reported on 8 March this year and the first death from the virus was reported on 18 March.
Global death toll rises to 1,657,913
The novel coronavirus has killed at least 1,657,913 people since the outbreak emerged in China last December, according to the Worldometer on Thursday.
At least 74,653,660 cases of coronavirus have been registered so far. Of these, at least 1,657,913 are now considered recovered.
On Thursday, 3,406 new deaths and 136,979 new cases were recorded worldwide.
The United States is the worst-affected country with 314,629 deaths from 17,394,314 cases.
After the US, the hardest-hit countries are Brazil with 183,822 deaths from 7,042,695 cases, India with 144,495 deaths from 9,951,962 cases, and Mexico with 115,769 deaths from 1,277,499 cases.
