50 lakh poor families can receive cash aid each thru bank accounts
There is no need to open new bank accounts for those who already have accounts
The recipients of Tk2,500 each – under the government's initiative to provide cash assistance to 50 lakh poor families hit by the coronavirus pandemic – can receive the aid using their respective bank accounts.
To this end, the Bangladesh Bank on Monday gave a directive to all banks to help the poor open an account at Tk10 as a deposit.
An attestation from the upazila nirbahi officer and a copy of the national ID card will be required for opening such accounts, the central bank circular said.
However, the people, who do not have mobile phones or the scope of opening mobile banking accounts, will only be considered for opening the Tk-10 bank accounts.
Such bank account holders will be able to receive cash assistance through cash vouchers if they do not have chequebooks.
There is no need to open new bank accounts for those who already have accounts.
The families having valid mobile banking accounts would get cash aid through mobile financial service providers.
Before the Eid-ul-Fitr, the government initiated to disburse the cash aid to the poor families but it stopped as eight lakh out of 50 lakh mobile banking account numbers were detected more than once into the government's database.
