Resident students of Dhaka University have started leaving their halls following an instruction from the university authorities to close all the dormitories amid coronavirus fears.
The authorities have asked all the resident students to vacate the halls by 6 pm on Friday.
President of Dhaka University Teachers' Association Professor ASM Maqsood Kamal made the announcement at a media briefing on Thursday.
The decision has been taken in an emergency meeting of the syndicate, he said.
Riaz Farayezi, a student of Hazi Muhammad Mohsin Hall, told The Business Standard he, along with his roommates, had left the hall just after the announcement. "I appreciate the decision of closing the halls."
The university has also extended the closure period till March 31 from the previously mentioned March 28.
Earlier, the government has decided to close all the educational institutions from March 17 to 31 as a precautionary measure to prevent the outbreak of coronavirus.
Bangladesh reported its first death from coronavirus infection on Wednesday. The total number of coronavirus infected persons stood at 18 as of Thursday in the country.
