Global corona death toll jumps 308% in 10 days
The rate of infection also leapt by 322 percent throughout the world during the same period
The global death toll from the coronavirus pandemic has jumped by a staggering 308 percent in the last 10 days, according to Worldometer – a web portal that tracks statistics in real time.
The number of daily deaths has gone up from 332 in March 11 to 1,356 in March 20.
Rate of infections also leapt by 322 percent throughout the world during the same period. Daily new cases have increased from 7,266 in March 11 to 30,665 in March 20.
The total number of people infected with the coronavirus reached 100,000 globally on March 6. However, the number doubled in just 12 days and surpassed 200,000 on March 18.
In the last ten days, on average 709 people across the globe died from the viral infection, a significant jump from the average death toll of 132 in the period between March 1 and March 10.
The coronavirus (formally known as Covid-19), which surfaced in a Chinese seafood and poultry market in Wuhan late last year, has spread to at least 186 countries.
Till the filing of this report, the virus has killed more than 11,889 people globally and infected more than 286,607 others.
The death toll has surpassed 5,000 in Europe, with Italy, Spain and Germany reporting a steep rise in infections.
Italy announced 627 more deaths, which is so far the biggest day-on-day increase in the country's four-week epidemic on Friday – a day after surpassing China's death toll. The total number of deaths in Italy has now reached 4,032.
Compared to China's population of 1.43 billion, Italy only has 60.46 million people.
Spain's death toll has also increased to more than 1,300. There has been a 25 percent rise in the number of overall cases in the country, according to figures released on Saturday. The new total is 24,926.
Coronavirus cases in Germany have increased by nearly 20 percent in the last 24 hours, said the Robert Koch Institute, the country's center for disease and control in Saturday.
It has also reported a further 2,705 coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours, taking the total to 16,662. There have also been 16 new coronavirus-related deaths, bringing the total to 47, according to Saturday's update.
Meanwhile in Iran, the number of deaths hit another grim milestone of 1,500 as the country marks the beginning of the Persian New Year.
The country has confirmed 966 new coronavirus cases, bringing the country's total number of cases to 20,610, health ministry spokesperson Kianush Jahanpoor announced on state television on Saturday. Over the last 24 hours, 123 people have died from the virus in Iran.
