Raging second wave of Covid-19 across India

Delhi has announced a six day lockdown from 10 pm tonight to 5 am next Monday. The decision was inevitable, according to Indian Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, because rising Covid-19 cases seriously stretched the city's finances and its health system has reached a breaking point.

Delhi on Sunday recorded the biggest jump in its daily Covid-19 tally with 25,462 fresh cases, making the capital India's worst-affected region while the positivity rate shot up to 29.74 per cent. Despite a decrease in the last 24 hours, the number of cases has remained high at 23,500.

All shops and businesses will be shut and movement will be limited to essential services in the Indian capital during the lockdown.

There have been similar measures in other parts of India, including in Maharashtra.

According to the state health department, Maharashtra, which is the worst-affected state in terms of cases and deaths, recorded the highest number of 68,631 new infections on Sunday, with 503 deaths.

With this, Maharashtra's total caseload increased to 38,39,338 cases, with 60,473 deaths.

Struggling to contain the huge Covid-19 surge, Maharashtra on Sunday declared the states of Kerala, Goa, Gujarat, Delhi and NCR region, Rajasthan and Uttarakhand, as places of "sensitive origin" in a bid to stop the "influx of other variants of coronavirus" from other locations.

As per the order signed by chief secretary Sitaram Kunte, passengers travelling to Maharashtra from these six states will need a RT-PCR negative test within 48 hours of their train travel.

Bihar, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu and Manipur have announced fresh restrictions. Apart from 9 pm-5 am night curfew, malls, schools, cinema halls, and places of worship have been shut in Bihar till May 15.

Over the last 24 hours, Bihar recorded 8,690 cases -- an all-time high. The total caseload is more than 3 lakh.

In the last 24 hours, Karnataka saw a spike of 19,067 cases. Bengaluru too saw its highest daily surge with 12,793 cases.

Tamil Nadu has announced a night curfew from Tuesday between 10 pm and 4 am. Beaches and parks have been temporarily shut, and interstate movement of buses has been restricted.

In Rajasthan, restrictions will be imposed from today till May 3 as part of a "anushasan pakhwada" or "self-discipline fortnight."

Manipur is bracing for a 7 pm- 5 am night curfew and large gatherings have been banned in the state.
