Jahangirnagar University student wins Daina award
Shawon Mahmud, a student of Jahangirnagar University (JU), has been nominated for the prestigious Diana Award 2024 by the British Royal Family for his outstanding contributions to science literacy.
A 46th batch student of the JU Physics Department, Shawon is a trailblazer promoting online science education in Bangladesh.
He founded BigyanPriyo in 2018 to address gaps in science education and combat pseudoscience. The platform has since become the largest Bengali science network, reaching over 1.5 million students worldwide.
Shawon also initiated Project Prachi, a VR-based first-aid training program that aims to train members of 30,000 households in essential first-aid skills by 2030.
The Diana Award honours individuals aged 9 to 25 who create positive change. It was established in memory of Diana, Princess of Wales, and is supported by her sons, HRH The Prince of Wales and Prince Harry, The Duke of Sussex.
Reflecting on the nomination, Shawon said, "Our goal was to create a science ecosystem in the Bengali language where people of all ages and levels could access resources, engage in scientific exploration, and satisfy their curiosity. The Diana Award is not just an honour; it's a validation of our efforts to inspire change.
