Production resumes in Gazipur RMG factories
Workers at two factories in Gazipur's Sreepur area observed a partial strike today
Almost all garment factories in Gazipur resumed production in full swing today (15 September), after last week's labour unrest caused more than a hundred factories to remain closed in Savar, Ashulia, and Gazipur.
Gazipur Industrial Police Additional Superintendent Md Imran Ahmed told The Business Standard that there were minor issues in some factories but those were resolved after discussions.
Shovon Islam, director of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), said, "There are 876 factories under BGMEA in Gazipur. Production activities were ongoing in all the factories today. However, 16 out of a total of 407 factories remained closed in Ashulia and Jirani areas adjacent to Gazipur."
Salauddin Chowdhury, member of International Apparel Federation and also member of BGMEA Standing Committee, said, "We are very happy with the overall situation. Army and Industrial Police are working alongside our security personnel to prevent any untoward situation."
Meanwhile, workers at two factories in Gazipur's Sreepur area observed a partial strike today, with demands including two-day weekly holiday and the resignation of some top executives.
Zainal Abedin, officer-in-charge of Sreepur Police Station, said the workers of the two factories observed a strike inside their factories and in the afternoon held discussion with the owners to resolve their issues.
No labour unrest was reported in the Sreepur area, he added.
