At least 20 people were killed, many houses were damaged and trees uprooted as severe cyclonic storm Amphan hit the coastal districts of Bangladesh on Wednesday evening after making a landfall in India's West Bengal.
Among the victims, six are from Jashore, three from Pirojpur, two each are from Patuakhali and Satkhira, and one each from Bhola, Laxmipur, Sandwip. The coastal areas of Khulna region have been devastated by the cyclone Amphan.
Fifteen of the deceased are -- Syed Shah Alam, 54, and Rashed, 5, from Patuakhali; Md Siddique, 72, and Rafiqul Islam, 35 from Bhola; Shahjahan Molla, 55, Gulenur Begum, 70, and Shah Alam, 50, from Pirojpur; Rabeya, 13, and Khento Begum, 45, from Jashore's Chaugachha; Moktar Ali, 65, Moyna Begum and Gopal from Jashore's Sharsha. Nadira Begum, 55, from Jhenaidah and Salauddin, 16, from Chattogram's Sandwip.
The storm damaged more than a lakh houses in different areas of Khulna, Satkhira and Bagerhat districts.
An extensive damage has been reported for the mango business in Rajshahi since a large number of mangoes have fallen off the trees as cyclone Amphan stormed through the orchards.
Heavy rains and high tidal surges broke the dams and submerged low-lying lands, ponds and crop lands in different areas. The amount of losses could not ascertained immediately.Besides, thousands of trees have been uprooted. The entire coastal region has faced extensive damage.
Meanwhile, rain accompanied by gusty wind occurred at many districts including the capital. It has been raining almost all night with gusty wind of 40 to 50 kilometers per hour.
Although the weather has improved in the morning, there are gusts of wind.
Cloudy weather is likely to continue today across the capital, according to the weather department.

Cyclone Amphan damages 763 hectares of crops in Bhola
Cyclone Amphan has damaged many houses and fish ponds in the char region of Bhola.
30 makeshift houses in the char region have been damaged, and at least 400 ponds in the district, including those used for fish farming, have been inundated due to water breaching the embankments of those areas.
The cyclone has damaged crops on almost 763 hectares land.
Amphan devastates Sundarbans coastal areas
The super cyclone Amphan that swept over Bangladesh on Wednesday has left the coastal areas of the Sundarbans devastated with sheer brutality.
The vast areas of Koira and Dakop in Khulna adjacent to the Sundarbans coast have once again been devastated even before their recovery from the catastrophic cyclones Sidr and Aila.
Electricity was cut off in these areas – including in Khulna city – as millions of people spent the night in anxiety in the midst of intense storms.
60% mobile towers in Amphan-hit areas affected
Mobile telecom services have been badly disrupted in the Amphan-hit southern region of the country as about 60 percent network towers were affected.
The cyclonic storm caused around 13,000 network towers of the region to be cut off the power supply.
Cyclone Amphan causes damage worth Tk1,100cr
Extensive damage of approximately Tk1,100 crore has been anticipated in 26 districts that were hit by cyclone Amphan on Wednesday evening.
Three districts that were affected most during the cyclone are Satkhira, Bagerhat and Patuakhali.
State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Dr Md Enamur Rahman revealed the information during a virtual briefing on Thursday.
Amphan inundates low-lying areas of Patuakhali
Eight upazilas of Patuakhali district have been inundated as embankments of the upazilas were breached by the tidal surge caused by cyclone Amphan last night.
Homes and businesses along College Road, Sobujbag, Puranbazar, Kathpatti, Launch Road and Sanirvar Road of the Zila Sadar were also flooded as waters breached safety embankments of the city.
Cyclone dashes a boatman’s dreams
Gias Uddin Khondoker (32), a resident of Dhal Char, an island near the Bay of Bengal in Charfession upazila of Bhola, has been earning his livelihood catching fish in the River Meghna and sometime in the Bay of Bengal since his childhood.
After working as a "malla" (an associate) of majhis (boatmen) for about 18 years, he became a majhi four years ago buying a boat. He had been living well since then. He also dreamt of buying another boat and becoming a solvent individual in his fraternity.
But all his dreams were dashed when cyclone Amphan took away his boat, his only means of earning livelihood, on Wednesday night. His teen-shade house was also damaged badly.
One crore people left without electricity in Amphan-hit areas
Around one crore people in the south-western and north-western regions of Bangladesh have been left without any power supply as the super cyclone Amphan has damaged the electricity supply system there.
The power went off on Wednesday afternoon when the cyclone Amphan hit the coastline of the Sundarbans.
Mobile phone networks are not working in some of the worst hit areas due to the disruption.
However, Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board (BREB) says that they are trying to restore the electricity supply by Thursday evening.
Tk120cr worth mango loss predicted in Rajshahi
An extensive damage of approximately Tk120 crore has been anticipated for Rajshahi mango business since cyclone Amphan stormed through the orchards.
According to the farmers, some 15 to 20 percent of the mangoes have fallen off the trees, Hamidul Haque, deputy commissioner of Rajshahi told The Business Standard.
"No casualty was reported in the district," he said, adding that "Brittle mud huts in the villages and char areas were destroyed."
"Moreover, the electricity service has been snapped as fallen tree branches damaged the wires and polls, he added.
Md Shamsul Islam, deputy director of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) in Rajshahi, said, Bagha and Charghat upazilas have been the hardest hit areas.
Cyclone Ampham claims 12 lives so far in Bangladesh
At least 12 people were killed as severe cyclonic storm Amphan hit the Sundarbans coast of Bangladesh coastlines on Wednesday evening after making a landfall in India's West Bengal.
The victims are from Patuakhali, Bhola, Pirojpur, Jashore, Laxmipur, Sandwip and Satkhira.
However, the Health Emergency Operation Control Room has confirmed deaths of four people.
An elderly man has died after a tree fell on him amid the stormy weather caused by the cyclonic storm Amphan in Bhola.
The victim, Siddique Fakir, 70, was injured in the tree-fall on Wednesday morning in Kachchapia area of Char Fashion and succumbed to his injury this afternoon while undergoing treatment in a local hospital.
A five-year-old kid named Rashed was killed on Wednesday evening after a tree fell on him while going to the cyclone centre with his parent’s at Patuakhali’s Galachipa upazila.
Shahjahan Molla, a resident of Pirojpur’s Mathbaria upazila died after a wall collapsed on him during the passage of Amphan.
A middle-aged woman also died while collecting mango during cyclone Amphan on Satkhira.
Syed Shah Alam, 50, the missing team leader of unit 6 of the Cyclone Preparedness Programme (CPP) was found dead, Deputy Commissioner of Patuakhali Matiul Alam Chowdhury told The Business Standard.
Shah Alam fell the Hafezpadar canal in Kalapara upazila of Patuakhali on Wednesday around 9am while calling out to everyone about the great danger signal.
He was with three others in a boat and had been missing since the then.
Meanwhile, Somoy Television reported three more deaths in Bhola, Laxmipur and Sandwip.
Two of the deceased are - Mohammadpur Rafiqul Islam, 35 from Laxmipur and Md Salahuddin, 18 from Sandwip.
Super Cyclone Amphan weakened into an extremely severe cyclonic storm on Tuesday evening, triggering heavy rain and gusts of wind in India's Odisha and rain in some parts of West Bengal, NDTV reports.
Cyclone Amphan is forecast to be the worst storm over the Bay of Bengal since the 1991.
In the history of independent Bangladesh, the 1991 cyclone was among the deadliest tropical cyclones on record. The cyclone caused at least 138,866 deaths at the last week of April of that year.
However, in 1970, Bhola cyclone killed more than 5 lakh people after it hit the entire coast of Bangladesh (pre-independence period). Most affected were Chattogram, Barguna, Khepupara, Patuakhali, north of Char Burhanuddin, Char Tazumuddin and south of Maijdi, Haringhata.
'At least 19 million children at risk in Bangladesh, India’
At least 19 million children in parts of Bangladesh and India were at imminent risk from flash flooding, storm surges and heavy rain caused by Cyclone Amphan, UNICEF warned on May 20.
UNICEF expressed its concern over the humanitarian consequences of Cyclone Amphan deepened by Covid-19 in both countries.
It also said that Cox's Bazar in Bangladesh – now sheltering over 850,000 Rohingya refugees – was likely to experience high winds and heavy rains which might cause damage to homes and shelters in the refugee camps and Bangladeshi communities.
Amphan damages crops, shrimp enclosures in Khulna’s Koyra-Paikgachha
The shrimp enclosures and crops worth over Tk100 crore have been washed away by the cyclone Amphan in Koyra and Paikgachha Upazila of Khulna last night.
Aktaruzzaman Babu, local MP of Koyra-Paikgachha Upazila told The Business Standard, "The huge number of shrimp enclosures and crops on vast lands in my area (Khulna-6) has been inundated. The total damage is more than Tk100 crore in the upazilas".
Most of the unions under Koyra Upazila of Khulna have been inundated due to the cyclone Amphan, according to local administration.
Road transport, electricity snapped in Satkhira, mango orchards damaged
The ferocious cyclone has totally destroyed parts of his mango orchard in 6-bigha land causing initial damage which accounts for around Tk3 lakh, said Humayun Ahmed Bilash, a resident of Tala upazila of Satkhira.
Besides mango orchards, paddy fields and other crops in most of the upazilas under Shatkhira district - including Keshabpur, Shyamnagar, Tala - were badly damaged.
Road communication has snapped as most of the roads and highways were blocked with flat-lying trees uprooted by the storm.
Amphan inundates western part of Sundarbans in Satkhira
Forest department officials suspect that cyclone Amphan has inundated the western part of the Sundarbans' forest-bed in Satkhira district.
The cyclone passed over the district with gusts of 72 to 148kmph and tidal surges up to nine feet.
Amphan weakens into storm, signal lowered at ports
Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) advised maritime ports of Mongla , Payra, Chattogram and Cox's Bazar to hoist local cautionary signal no 3 as super cyclone Amphan has weakened into a cyclonic storm after making landfall.

Water entering localities through embankments in Ctg
Localities in Anwara coastal area of Chattogram have been flooded by tidal waves caused by cyclone Amphan.
"Water has been entering the area through the embankment since Wednesday evening but has not reached the houses yet", according to local people.
Amphan likely to move towards Rajbari, Sirajganj, Jamalpur after crossing coast
The cyclonic storm Amphan over Satkhira district and adjoining areas moved north and is lying over Jhenaidah district now.
It is likely to move in a north-northeasterly direction further and gradually weaken, a special bulletin from the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) released on early hours of Thursday says.
Amphan moved towards Jashore and Narail on Wednesday night with a wind speed of 90km/h.
Electricity supply disrupted in south-western regions of Bangladesh
Electricity supply has been disrupted in the most areas of the south-western region as cyclone Amphan stroked the coastline.
Most of the areas of Barishal and Khulan division have had no electricity supply since Wednesday noon.
Amphan breaks coastal embankment in Satkhira
Cyclone Amphan has broken the embankment between Chuna river and Burigowalini union of Satkhira, flooding a whole village under the union.
Burigowalini Union Parishad Chairman Bhabtash Kumar Mandal said, “One village under the union already got flooded by the excessive water from Chuna river. The rest of the 15 villages will also get flooded soon.”
The area experiencing heavy storm till the filling of the report at 10pm Wednesday.
“We will take initiatives to repair the embankment after the storm,” Executive Engineer of Satkhira Water Development Board-1 Abul Khayer said.

1,933 medical teams prepared for cyclone response
In order to ensure proper healthcare for the people affected by cyclone Amphan, 1,933 medical teams have been deployed to three coastal divisions.
Chattogram division has the highest number of medical teams – 1,212 – followed by Barishal with 418 and Khulna with 303.
"A sufficient number of medical teams have been prepared for each district as per their needs," said Habibur Rahman Khan, convener of the health media cell and additional secretary (administration) at the Health Services Division.

India reports 2 deaths as Amphan slams into West Bengal
India has reported two deaths as extremely severe cyclonic storm Amphan slammed into West Bengal on Wednesday afternoon, reports Indian daily newspaper Anandabazar Patrika.
Among the deceased, a 13-year-old adolescent girl from Howrah's Shalimar died after a piece of tin, flying on the storm wind, hit her.
Another woman, who is yet to be identified, died in Minakhan of North 24 Parganas district after a tree fell on her.
According to Alipore Regional Meteorological Centre, Amphan hit Kolkata with a wind speed of 130km/h at 6:55pm.
People of Sundarbans coastal area taking shelter in cyclone centres
People of coastal areas in Sundarbans are taking shelter in cyclone centres as cyclone Amphan is 290km away from Mongla port.
The river embankments became weak as the water level has risen in different rivers of the coastal area due to the effect of cyclone Amphan .
It is raining heavily after a while across the coastal area.
The authority of Mongla port said, 11 vessels including cargo ships were taken in a safe place.
CPP unit team leader missing, villages under water in Patuakhali
While calling out to everyone about the great danger signal, a member of Cyclone Preparedness Programme (CPP) fell into the Hafezpadar canal in Kalapara upazila of Patuakhali at around 9 am on Wednesday and has been missing since then.
Syed Shah Alam, 50, was the team leader of unit 6 of CPP. He was with three others in a boat.
On the other hand, 17 villages on the banks of Rabnabad in Lalua union have submerged underwater. Around 2500 families are stuck.
Govt increases shelter centres to tackle Amphan
The government has prepared some 14,636 shelter centres where almost 24 lakh people can be accommodated as extremely severe cyclonic storm Amphan is approaching towards Bangladesh coastlines.
State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Dr Enamur Rahman made the remark in a virtual briefing on Wednesday regarding the latest situation and preparedness to tackle the cyclone Amphan.
20 chars of Bhola under 3-4 feet of water
About 20 chars along the Meghna-Tetulia, including Char Kukri Mukri, Dhal Char, Char Nizam and Kalatoli chars in Bhola, have been submerged in three to four feet water.
The water level in these areas has been rising since 12pm. Around 25,000 people have been affected by the water rising, said Deputy Commissioner Masud Alam Siddique.
So far, two lakh people have been taken to shelter, he added.
Govt prepared to face cyclone Amphan: PM
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said the government is prepared with every possible initiative to protect lives and properties from the extremely severe cyclonic storm Amphan.
The premier has come up with the remark at a meeting of the National Disaster Management Council today.
"The disaster management instructions on what to do to deal with the super cyclone Amphan have been given," she added.
Cyclone Amphan to hit West Bengal between 4 to 6pm
Cyclone Amphan, one of the worst storms over the Bay of Bengal in years, is likely to hit West Bengal this evening between 4 to 6pm, reports NDTV.
In Kolkata, the airport has been shut till 5 am tomorrow after the city, close to the coast, was put on alert.
The India Meteorological Department on Wednesday, in its national bulletin on cyclone, stated that after super cyclone Amphan makes landfall over the Bengal coast today evening, it is very likely to continue to move north-northeastwards across Gangetic West Bengal and Bangladesh before gradually weakening.
“It is likely to maintain the intensity of cyclonic storm till the morning of May 21,” the weather department said in its bulletin.
Cyclone Amphan may hit Rajshahi region
The cyclone Amphan, formed in the Bay of Bengal, may also hit the Rajshahi region if the direction changes.
Rajshahi Deputy Commissioner Hamidul Haque confirmed the matter to the reporters on Wednesday morning.
He urged the district people to be careful regarding all types of crops including mangoes.
Highest alert 4 at Chattogram port for cyclone Amphan
All the operations of the country's premier port Chattogram remained suspended since Wednesday morning as the authorities issued "highest security alert 4" due to cyclone Amphan, which may hit the Bangladesh coast this afternoon.
Following the met office declaration of great danger signal number 9 for the maritime port Chattogram and Cox's Bazar in the morning, the Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) issued the highest danger alert 4.
Some 2 lakh take shelter at 753 Patuakhali cyclone centers
More than some 2 lakh people have gathered at 753 cyclone shelters in Patuakhali as frontal rain and gusty wind seemed to appear soon after Mongla maritime port was asked to hoist great danger signal number 10. A number of 325 medical teams are ready to serve.
According to district administration, 205,685 people came to shelter centers until late night.
Deputy Commissioner Md Matiul Islam and Police Super Mainul Hasan visited the centers last night and suggested them to follow social distancing rules.
Cyclone Amphan may hit the Sundarbans
Cyclone Amphan is heading towards Sundarbans coast. Heavy rains have been falling across the coast intermittently due to the impact of Amphan. The water level in the rivers of the Sundarbans coast has increased and waves above 10-15 feet are expected.
This has put the weak embankments at risk. The people of the coastal areas have become terrified and have already started going to cyclone shelters.
Rain, gusty wind grip Satkhira
An uneasy calm has dawned upon Satkhira coastal areas along with rain and gusty wind as super cyclone Amphan might hit the areas this evening.
Bangladesh's Met office has advised maritime ports Payra and Mongla to hoist great danger signal number 10. There may be tidal surges of 5-10 feet height, said Satkhira Meteorological Department Officer-in-Charge Zulfiqar Ali.
Meanwhile, a drizzling with gusty wind prevailing in the district, and it will increase in the afternoon, the meteorologist said.
Amphan, presently moving at a wind speed of 17 to 20 kilometers per hour, will hit Satkhira coastal areas with a wind speed of 150-160 kilometers per hour, he added.
About 2,14,400 residents of the coastal areas have been taken to shelter till 10am this morning, said Abdul Baset, Satkhira District Relief and Rehabilitation officer.
Some 147 cyclone shelters and 1700 educational institutions are being used as shelters in the district.
Residents of Barishal's char areas reluctant to go to cyclone centres
Despite of high risk as cyclone Amphan approaching, residents of different char areas and riverside in Barishal are showing reluctance to go to cyclone shelters.
A sources of Barishal District Administration's control room said, 1,071 shelter centres including different schools were prepared for the people at risk. Some 2,45,150 people can stay there. But only, 1,400 people took shelter in few centres till 10 pm on Tuesday.
About 20,000 people of different remote chars including Shefali, Majher char, Bagjhora, Char megha, Shinnir char of Mehendiganj upazila did not go to shelter centres, the administration said.
Officials of the upazila administration and local representatives said, local administrative people and volunteers of Cyclone Preparedness Programme (CPP) are doing huge publicity campaign to send people to shelter centres. But people do not agree to go.
The lowland of the chars goes under water if the water level rises up four to five feet high than normal tide. So people of the areas could be in danger.
Mehendiganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Pijush Chandra Dey said, local people did not want to go to the shelter centre leaving their homestead till 10 pm, as situation was normal. But rain started after 10 pm. Then people started to go to shelter centre.
We sent several trawlers to take people from chars. We will continue our activities until we can take them to safe shelter, he added.
The UNO also said, "We arranged dry food and khichuri in the shelter centres. We also arranged hand wash facility, so that people can wash their hands with soap due to the coronavirus outbreak. We are also monitoring whether social distancing is maintaining there or not."
District civil surgeon Dr Monwar Hossain said, doctors of all the upazila health complexes were asked to stay prepared. Medical teams have been formed up in every upazilas. Medical equipment and ambulance were also prepared.
Deputy Commissioner of Barishal SM Ojior Rahman said, "We made all kind of preparations to face the cyclone Amphan. The officials and staffs of all the upazilas and Union Parishads were asked not to leave their workstations."
Another Tk4 lakh allotted to fight Amphan in Barguna
The government has allocated another Tk4 lakh for the coastal district of Barguna to deal with the cyclonic storm Amphan crisis that is all set hit the coastal area of the country today.
As of now, Tk29 lakh and 200 metric tons of rice have been issued for the district.
This newly allotted amount will be spent for children and cattle foods.
District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Md Lutfur Rahman told The Business Standard, “We have enough relief stored for the district and more will be allocated depending upon necessity.”
Rain, gusts in coastal districts
The coastal districts of Bangladesh have been experiencing light to moderate rain and stormy weather from Tuesday evening.
"We have taken required preparation to minimise the losses of lives and assets," said Patuakhali's Baufol Upazila Nirbahi Officer Zakir Hossain.
Cox's Bazar Deputy Commissioner Kamal Hossain said, "District administration has taken steps to prevent losses by the cyclone Amphan along with ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Nearly 600 shelter centres, 71 medical team and eight rapid response team have been kept ready."
Satkhira Met Official Zulfikar Ali said, "The coastal districts are already witnessing rain and stormy winds due to the impact of Amphan. There is possibility of five to ten feet high storm surge."
Char residents vulnerable to looming Cyclone Amphan
The fate of about 46,000 people remains uncertain ahead of Cyclone Amphan as there are no cyclone shelters in several parts of Bhola and Patuakhali – especially in the char areas.
Apprehension has gripped residents of Dhalchar, Char Patila and Char Nizam of Charfassion upazila, Kalatali of Manpura upazila, and Chandra Dweep Union of Bauphal upazila in Patuakhali district – as they do not know where they will go once the cyclonic storm hits Bangladesh.
4046 cyclone shelters prepped to tackle Amphan in Chattogram
Chattogram district administration has prepped 4046 cyclone shelters to house people of the coastal district during the super-cyclone Amphan, that is going to hit Bangladesh today.
Fifteen thousand volunteers along with 284 medical teams have also been kept on stand by to help the people of the district during this natural calamity.
Residents being evacuated from the coast and hills in Chattogram
Residents of coastal areas and hills of Chattogram are being shifted to shelters to protect them from super cyclone Amphan.
From Tuesday morning, the district administration began taking residents of coastal areas to shelters, and made announcements by loudspeaker in the hill areas asking residents to clear out as soon as possible.

Govt prepares for super cyclone Amphan
The government has prepared a total of 10,409 shelter centres and formed medical teams with 1,757 members in 19 district as a precautionary measure for the approaching super cyclone Amphan.
The Health Emergency Operations Center & Control Room has provided disaster management necessary information to deal with Amphan.
The medical teams have been formed consisting - medical officers and assistant surgeons, senior staff nurses, midwives, deputy assistant community medical officers, health assistants, CHCP and other staff of the concerned facility, according to a government circular.

Over 10,000 fishermen yet to return from sea as Amphan approaches coast
As the super cyclone Amphan approaches the coastal areas of the country, all fishing boats and trawlers out on the Bay of Bengal have started returning to shore.
However, over 600 fishing boats from Chattogram and Cox's Bazar have not returned yet, although the authorities had asked all boats out at sea to anchor by Tuesday. About 10,000 to 12,000 fishermen are aboard these boats.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has also asked all fishing boats and trawlers in the north bay and the deep sea to immediately take and remain in shelter until further notice.
5-year-old kid killed under falling tree while going to cyclone shelter
A 5-year-old kid named Rashed died as a tree fell on him while going to the cyclone shelter centre with his parents in Patuakhali.
The incident took place on Wednesday evening at the Panpatti area of the district's Galachipa upazila.
